trisomy

Term: trisomy,  (tri-)+ (-somic)
Origin: Anc Greek
????-/????? (= the number three)
????/soma (=body) > ????/syma(=corpse)
Coined:
In plants, first case of trisomy was investigated in Datura stromonium (Jimson weed) by Blakeslee and Belting in 1924. D. stramonium normally has 12 pairs of chromosomes in the somatic cells, but in a individual they discovered 25 chromosomes (2n + 1).

Definition:
Trisomy is a deviation of normal chromosome (aneuploidy)  leading to gain  of one  extra individual chromosomes from diploid set. In humans only three autosomal trisomies occur in liveborn infants (trisomy 13, 21 and 18).

- Chromosomal Aberration
Chromosomal aberration refers to a change in number of chromosomes, can occur on one, or several, or all of the chromosomes within a nucleus. This is cause by the failure of sister chromatids to separate during anaphase of mitosis or the failure of homologous...

- Klinefelter's Syndrome Is Caused Due To The
A) absence of one of the X-chromosomes B) presence of additional copy of X-chromosome in males C) trisomy of chromosome number 21 D) presence of additional copy of X-chromosome in females The correct answer is: B) presence of additional copy of X-chromosome...

- Diploid Chromosome Number
Humans have a diploid chromosome number of 46 chromosomes. In other words, there are a total of 46 chromosomes in human cells. The diploid number varies depending on each species. Having a diploid chromosome number means that an organism?s cells contain...

- Aneuploidy
Term: aneuploidy (an-+eu-+ploidy)Origin: Anc Greek ??/an (=?-/a (privative meaning ?not?) or ??-/an-(=privative before a vowel)??/eu(=prefix meaning "well, good, easy" )-?????/ploos(noun) (=fold, combining form from verb ?????? /plasso(=create, make)...

- Sex Determination In Animals
Sex chromosomes and AutosomesMost of the diploid organisms are with separate sexes. The organisms producing sperms are called males and those producing eggs (ova) are called females. Chromosome is the major factor to determine the sex of an organism. The...
