stroma (pl stromata)

Term: stroma
Origin: Anc Greek
??????/stroma(=bed covering) > ?????????? /storenemi(=spread out for sitting or lying upon)

Definition:
1.       (anatomy). The supportive framework of an organ or other structure, typically composed of connective tissue.
1.  (cell biology).  The spongy matrix of a cell that functionally supports the cell.
3. (botany).  The matrix of the chloroplast which is a thick fluid in between grana where various enzymes, molecules and ions are found, and where the dark reaction (or carbohydrate formation reactions) of photosynthesis occurs.
4. (mycology) in certain fungi stroma is the somatic mass of fungous tissue.

- Structure And Functions Of Organelles
The nucleus is bound by two membranes known as the nuclear envelope, which has perforations called nuclear pores. Chromatin within the nucleus condenses to form chromosomes during cell division. The nucleus controls all cellular activity. During mitosis,...

- Q: Discuss The Role Of Membranes In The Synthesis Of Atp During Photosynthesis
The chloroplast is enclosed by two membranes, and this separates reactions within the chloroplast from the rest of the cytoplasm. The double membrane of the chloroplast also serves to maintain high substrate concentrations within the chloroplast for photosynthesis....

- Connective Tissue
Although in the picture one can only see the ?blue? veins in my arm, veins and arteries carry blood. Blood is one of the six major types of connective tissue. Connective tissue binds and supports other tissues, and it consists of many cells scattered...

- #103 The Light-independent Reactions (calvin Cycle)
The light-independent reactions take place in the stroma of the chloroplast, where the enzyme ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase, usually known as rubisco, is found. 1. Carbon fixation CO2 diffuses into the stroma from the air spaces within the...

- #100 Chloroplasts
Photosynthesis takes place inside chloroplasts. These are organelles surrounded by 2 membranes, called an envelope. Chloroplasts are found in mesophyll cells in leaves: - Palisade mesophyll cells contain most chloroplasts. - Spongy...
