In 1879 by the German botanist and father of plant pathology Heinrich Anton deBary ("The Phenomenon of Symbiosis", 1879). It was originally coined to refer to all cases where dissimilar organisms live together in an matually beneficial association.
Definition:
In a modern sense symbiosis is the relationship between two or more organisms of different species in which at least one member of the pair benefits from this association.
