Coined/History
The term coined by German physiologist Theodor Schwann in the early 19th century when he identified a chemical agent in the stomachs of animals with digestive properties. In 1929 John H. Nortrop was able to isolate and crystallize it.
Definition
Pepsin is a proteolytic acidic enzyme (unstable above pH 6) that cleaves the peptide bonds at carboxy site preferentially of aromatic residues. Pepsin is produced in the stomach mucosa after the proteolysis of proenzyme pepsinogen.
