-omics is a suffix which originally was used in word ?genomics> genome =gene + chromosome in order to indicate the complete set of chromosomes and the genes contained in them. An omics technology has come to mean an approach capable of generating a comprehensive data set of whatever is being measured, be it transcripts (transcriptomics), proteins (proteomics), or metabolites (metabonomics).
Coined:
The actual term of metabonomics was devised by Jeremy Nicholson, Elaine Holmes, and John Lindon of Imperial College (London) from the Greek roots ?meta? (change) and ?nomos? (rules or laws) in reference to chemometric models that have the ability to classify changes in metabolism (Lindon et al., 2004a). The term metabolomics was defined and indicated by Fiehn (2001) to be the ?comprehensive and quantitative analysis of all metabolites. ??
Definition:
Metabonomics or metabolonomics is defined as the quantitative measurement of the time-related multi-parametric metabolic response of living systems (in vivo) to pathophysiological stimuli or genetic modification (Nicholson et al., 1999).

What is the difference between metabonomics and metabolomics, The matter is more a subject of historical usage than meaningful scientific definition as both are used with the same scientific sense.
