Leprosy

Leprosy is a disease that causes harmful skin sores and nerve damage to the arms and legs. Leprosy has been around since way back then, and it was such a terrifying disease that the people who had it were often shunned and sent out of the country. It is caused by slow growing kind of bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. The symptoms are these nasty pale skin sores or bumps and the damaged nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, or the peripheral nerves. Nerve damage can cause loss of feeling in arms or legs and muscle weakness. Symptoms don't show until a couple years later after having the bacteria since the bacteria goes at such a slow pace.

In 2002, about 1,000 people in America died from leprosy and about 2,000 in South Asia. But now with the medicine we have the bacteria can be killed quickly and the patient can be treated within a few months. Leprosy isn't too contagious that in order to catch the disease you have a lot of contact and have shared mouth or nose droplets. Currently about 180,000 have leposy, mostly in S. Asia and Africa, and about 200 people in America are diagnosed every year.
