glycolysis
Term: glycolysis
Literally meaning: ?dissolution of the sugar?
Origin: Anc Greek
??????/glycos(=sweet) as glycose, an older term for glucose
+?????/lysis(=dissolution, degradation > verb ???/leo =break up, solve, loose, degradate)
Coined/History
In 1897 Buchner found by accident that yeast extracts could convert sucrose to ethanol proving that fermentation could occur outside living cells. Seven years later, (1905) William Young discovered that the rate of fermentation decreased without the addition of phosphate (Pi). By 1940 all of the vreactions of the glycolysis pathway were known from the research of Embden, Meyerhof, Parnas and Warburg.
Definition
Glycolysis is the anaerobic catabolism of glucose that takes place in the cytoplasm and converts glucose (C6H12O6), into pyruvate (CH3COCOO? + H+). producing four ATP molecules and two NADH2+ molecules.

Glycolysis Broken Down
Glycolysis can be a pretty daunting concept to really get a firm understanding on, with so many different molecule derivatives involved. So here, I will be explaining this process in a step-by-step manner that hopefully, will help alleviate any frustrations....

Glycolysis
Glycolysis the breakdown of a glucose molecule into two pyruvate molecules. It is an example of substrate level phosphorylation. It occurs in the cytoplasm, whether in aerobic or anaerobic conditions. Glucose > Glucose-6-phosphate > Fructose-6-phosphate...

Q: Explain The Small Yield Of Atp From Anaerobic Respiration
In the absence of oxygen, the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl CoA, the Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation are prevented as oxygen is not available as the final electron acceptor. Hence, only glycolysis can occur, generating 2 molecules of ATP...

# 91 Anaerobic Respiration - Ethanol And Lactate Pathways
Anaerobic respiration is a type of respiration that does not use oxygen. It is used when there is not enough oxygen for aerobic respiration. In the absence of free oxygen: Oxidative phosphorylation cannot take place, as there is nothing to accept...
