Definition
Cyanosis is the appearance of a blue or purple coloration of the skin or mucous membranes caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood associated with conditions such as cold temperatures, heart failure and lung diseases. Blood contains hemoglobin which is bright red when it contains oxygen, but appears dark or "bluish" after it gives up oxygen.
