EAL Biology revision Sheet.
This is not to be used on its own, but in conjunction with your notes, experiments, textbook and blog.
Scientific Method
You should be able to:
· Identify variables
· Plan out an experiment using the scientific method
· Record and present data appropriately
· Make conclusions from data obtained or presented
· Identify sources of error and suggest suitable improvements
· Identify the characteristics of living things
Ecology
Understand and be able to use some key terms:
· Ecology, population, community, species, abiotic, biotic, ecosystem, biome, food chain, food web, producer, consumer, carnivore, herbivore, decomposer, nitrifying bacteria, denitrifying bacteria, nitrogen fixation, predator, prey, photosynthesis, respiration, symbiosis, mutualism, commensalism and parasitism
You need to be able to: understand, construct and use:
· Food chains and webs
· Pyramid of numbers
· Pyramid of biomass
· Predator/prey relationship data
· Limiting factors on the size of a population
· The nitrogen, carbon and water cycles
· The human population curve and age distribution according to location
Cells
You need to be able to understand and know the following:
· The differences between plant and animal cells
· The organelles found in cells and their function
· Specialised cells e.g. muscle, heart, blood, nerve, stomata, palisade cells etc.
· The structure and function of a cell membrane
· The transpiration stream (xylem vessels, stomata etc.)
· Diffusion and Osmosis. Predict and explain the movement of water in and out of cells and the effect that it has
After watching the video clip (under lung structure post) on gas exchange in the lungs, write a detailed account of how gas exchange occurs. You need to include terms such as: surface area, diffusion, alveoli, capillary network etc You should of course...
