Coined/History
In 1952 by Andre Lwoff (1902-1994). Lwoff was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine (1965), along with Francois Jacob and  Jacques Monod for his finding that the genetic material of a virus can be assimilated into bacteria.
Definition
A prophage is the latent stage of a phage in a bacteriuma phage in which viral genome inserted and integrated into the circular bacterial DNA chromosome.
