Coined/History
The use of the word is attributed to Greek physician Galen of Pergamon(130?200 AD) but Hippocrates (460BC-ca.370BC) is said to have used a cautery tool (mydros) as an instrument to cause pupil dilation because of fear.
Definition
Mydriasis is the persistent and excessive dilation of the pupil (>6mm) that does not return to normal state even under influence of light. Mydriasis is caused usually by use of certain drugs or trauma to the eye. In addition , the ophthalmologist may induce mydriasis, using topical atropine in order to examine inner eye.
