Evalution of the the affect of acidity on germination experiment

The effect of acidity on seeds experiment- Evaluation

The possible sources of error are:

·         pH meter fluctuations

·         Uneven light distribution

·         Uneven temperature distribution

·         Other chemicals in the solutions. Orange juice, Vinegar and coffee contain other chemicals

·         Not all seeds are the same

The pH meter gave (+/- 0.01) readings; the slight fluctuation in the reading would not have a significant effect on the result. The variation in temperature and light could have had an effect, however, it was noted that some of the seeds that germinated first were furthest away from the light source. Therefore, it is unlikely that it would have had a significant effect. Vinegar, Orange juice and coffee do contain lots of chemicals and so the independent variable of acidity is not perfectly isolated. It could be that other chemicals had an affect and not just the acidity. Seeds are not identical and some just germinate before others even if the conditions are the same.

Possible improvements

·         Make sure that the light source is directly above the seeds and they are all as equally distant as possible

·         Repeat the experiment with different concentrations of hydrochloric acid, so that only the acidity is varied

·         Repeat the experiment several times and with more seeds to improve the validity of the results.

- Homework
You need to check that you know all of the definitions of the words that we looked at today. You also need to identify the: independent, dependent and controlled variables for the following experiment which is investigating the effect of the intenstity...

- Homework
Please make sure that you have a neat version of the method for your experiment with seeds. You also need to have a neat large results table so that you have space to record the data over the next week. In addition you should cut out and put the 'foolish...

- #74 Identifying Sources Of Error
It is very important to understand the difference between experimental errors and 'mistakes'. A mistake is something that you do incorrectly, such as misreading the scale on a thermometer, or taking a reading at the wrong time, or not emptying...

- #69 How To Get High Marks In Paper 3 - Variables
Many of the experiments that you will do during your AS course, and usually Question 1 in the examination paper, will investigate the effect of one factor on another. These factors are called variables. Types of variables The factor that you change...

Today we observed our seeds after one day. Mrs. Tyrell accidentally dropped Arthur's seeds and lost two of them. She also gave us candy, thanks Mrs.Tyrell!!! Then we had to draw a perfect plant that would fit 8 biomes ...
