chromothripsis

Term: chromothripsis
Literally meaning: ?chromosomes shattering?
Origin: Anc Greek
?????-/chromo-(=combining form denoting color)
+??????/thripsis ( =the process of shattering into pieces )> ?????/trivo (= to rub)
Coined/History
The term was coined in 2011 by Stephens et al who published their paper in Cell suggesting  that during cancer development the pattern of chromosome rearrangement can only be explained by a singular event.

Definition
Chromothripsis is the phenomenon of the chromosomal rearrangements involving many simultaneous chromosome breaks on one or more chromosomes. Chromothripsis is restricted to a chromosomal region and it is believed that could lead to cancer.

- Autosomes & Sex Chromosomes
All About Autosomes and Sex Chromosomes: Let me start off by explaining that Autosomes and Sex Chromosomes are from the same chromosome, which contains 46 chromosomes total. In each chromosome there are TWO Sex Chromosomes out of the total 46...

- The Y Chromosome Has Several Male-specific Genes
KEY CONCEPTS:The Y chromosome has ~60 genes that are expressed specifically in testis. The male-specific genes are present in multiple copies in repeated chromosomal segments. Gene conversion between multiple copies allows the active genes to be maintained...

KEY TERMS:Crossing-over describes the reciprocal exchange of material between chromosomes that occurs during prophase I of meiosis and is responsible for genetic recombination. A bivalent is the structure containing all four chromatids (two representing...
