angioplasty
Term: angioplasty
Literally meaning: ?vessel forming? or ?vessel molding??
Origin: Anc Greek
??????/aggio (=vessel, receptacle) > ?????/aggos(=tube)
+??????/plasso(=to shape)
Coined/History
The term was coined in January of 1964 by vascular radiologist Charles Dotter (1920-1985) who invented the catheter-delivered stent and performed the first angioplasty in an 82-year-old woman with painful leg ischemia. Dotter claimed that ?catheters should replace scalpels? but it was not until around 1980 that this technique gained acceptance in US.
