angiogenin (Ang-1)

Term: angiogenin (Ang-1) or ribonuclease 5
Literally meaning: ?that produces vessels?
Origin: Anc Greek
??????/aggio (=vessel, receptacle) > ?????/aggos(=tube)
+?????/geno(= ?produce?, ?give birth to?, ?create?)
Coined/History
The term angiogenesis was coined by Arthur T. Hertig in 1935 to describe the formation of new blood vessels in the placenta. Angiogenin was named the first angiogenesis factor to be isolated in pure form from human sources (colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line HT-29).

Definition
Angiogenin is coded by ANG gene and acts as ribuneclease of tRNAs and  a potent stimulator of endothelial cells. Although angiogenin is not a tumour specific protein (123 aa), it was the first angiogenic protein to be isolated from human tumour cells. It is characterised by its capacity for neovasscularization not only in tumors but also in healthy tissues.
